A Dry Run

A Dry Run by M. Ackerman – book cover

One week. One USB stick. Half of Spain is looking for him.

Six months after Lucia walked out on him, Richard is quietly drinking his early retirement away on Spain’s Costa Cálida. Then she turns up at his door with a rucksack and a warning: she is a dead woman, and something is going to happen on the 12th.

By the time he gets back from an errand, Lucia has vanished. There are men letting themselves into his flat, a hidden USB stick, and a coded message pointing to a village he has never heard of.

Told to trust no one, not even the police, Richard heads into Spain’s empty interior by train, bus and on foot. They find him anyway. His face appears on national television. A spotter plane sweeps the barren sierra of Teruel as search parties close in.

With the help of Silvia, a fiercely stubborn stranger with her own reasons to want answers, Richard must piece together what Lucia uncovered and reach the one man who can stop it, before the shadowy network known only as La Junta silences them both.

In a country running dry, water is worth killing for.

A Dry Run is a fast-paced, wrong-man-on-the-run thriller in the tradition of The Thirty-Nine Steps, set against the sun-baked landscapes, mountain villages and fiestas of Aragon.
