Hi, I’m Matthew.

A Dry Run began with two things: re-reading John Buchan’s The Thirty-Nine Steps while visiting family in the heart of Aragon, and the fierce debate going on in Spain at the time (and still today) over water: who owns it, who gets to use it, and whether it should be piped from one end of the country to the other.

It seemed the perfect backdrop for an old-fashioned “shocker”: an ordinary man on the run from enemies hidden in plain sight, across a part of Spain most visitors never see. Every place in the book is real, so if you ever fancy following in Richard’s footsteps, you can. I’d just avoid spending the night in the ruined castle at Valacloche.
